Kubota KX040 at a glance
KX040-5 replaced the KX040-4 in 2025
Kubota announced the KX040-5 on January 21, 2025, at World of Concrete in Las Vegas, with dealer availability in the first quarter of 2025. It brought keyless start and KubotaNOW telematics as standard, a 7 in color LCD with jog dial, and a redesigned cab. Kubota’s website still lists the KX040-4 next to it.
Digs 11 ft 2.3 in, reaches 17 ft 8.6 in
The KX040-5 digs 11 ft 2.3 in (3,410 mm) deep, dumps at 12 ft 9.5 in and reaches 17 ft 8.6 in at ground level. The KX040-4 is within half an inch on all three.
40.3 hp Kubota D1803 engine
A 1.8 L (111.4 cu in) Kubota diesel rated at 40.3 hp gross (SAE J1995) at 2,200 rpm on the KX040-5. The KX040-4 lists 40.4 hp gross and 38.9 hp net from the earlier D1803-CR-TE4.
Three blade choices
A standard straight blade (5 ft 6.9 in), an angle blade that swings 25 degrees each way, or a 6-in-1 blade that also tilts 10 degrees. On the KX040-5 the angle blade adds about 430 to 440 lb and the 6-in-1 about 770 to 780 lb over the standard blade.

Kubota KX040-5 specifications

How deep can a Kubota KX040 dig?
The KX040-5 digs 11 ft 2.3 in (134.3 in, 3,410 mm). The KX040-4 is listed at 11 ft 2.7 in (3,420 mm), so depth is effectively the same across both generations. The Kubota brochure gives one working range for the machine, with no long-arm option listed.
| Working range (KX040-5) | US | Metric |
|---|---|---|
| Max. digging depth | 11 ft 2.3 in (134.3 in) | 3,410 mm |
| Max. vertical digging depth | 7 ft 9.9 in (93.9 in) | 2,385 mm |
| Max. digging height | 17 ft 6 in (210 in) | 5,335 mm |
| Max. dumping height | 12 ft 9.5 in (153.5 in) | 3,900 mm |
| Max. digging radius at ground level | 17 ft 8.6 in (212.6 in) | 5,400 mm |
| Max. digging radius | 18 ft 1.9 in (217.9 in) | 5,535 mm |
| Min. turning radius, without / with boom swing | 7 ft 0.8 in / 5 ft 11.1 in | 2,155 / 1,805 mm |
Max. digging depth is the lowest point the bucket teeth reach. The vertical figure, 7 ft 9.9 in, is the deepest straight wall the machine can cut. For a trench, work out the soil volume with our trench calculator.
How much weight can a Kubota KX040 lift?
The most Kubota lists for the KX040-5 is 4,310 lb: over the front with the blade down, at ground level, 8 ft out from the axis of rotation. Over the side at the same point it is 2,690 lb, about 38 percent less. At a 14 ft radius the figures fall to 2,030 lb and 1,240 lb.

Over front, blade down
| Lift point height | 8 ft radius | 12 ft radius | 14 ft radius |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 ft | 2,720 lb | 1,910 lb | 1,750 lb |
| 4 ft | 3,560 lb | 2,140 lb | 1,870 lb |
| 2 ft | 4,130 lb | 2,330 lb | 1,980 lb |
| Ground level | 4,310 lb | 2,450 lb | 2,030 lb |
Over side

|---|---|---|---|
| 6 ft | 2,710 lb | 1,620 lb | 1,290 lb |
| 4 ft | 2,820 lb | 1,580 lb | 1,270 lb |
| 2 ft | 2,730 lb | 1,550 lb | 1,250 lb |
| Ground level | 2,690 lb | 1,530 lb | 1,240 lb |
Kubota’s chart is for a machine without a bucket, so take off the weight of your bucket, coupler and thumb to get what you can actually hang from the lift point. The brochure gives no blade-up figures. The KX040-4 chart is slightly lower: 4,250 lb over the front and 2,600 lb over the side at 8 ft and ground level.
KX040-5 vs. KX040-4: what changed
A used machine is more likely to be a KX040-4, since the KX040-5 only reached dealers in 2025. On paper the two dig the same hole: the changes are in the hydraulics, the cab and the standard technology. Pump capacity rose 19 percent, and Kubota added Engine Speed Sensing, which it says lets the machine use more of the engine’s power without stalling under load.

The KX040-4 brochure we used was printed in November 2014, and the model stayed on sale for years after that. For a specific year, give a Kubota dealer the serial number to confirm the exact specifications.
How much does a Kubota KX040 weigh?
- KX040-5: 9,182 lb with a canopy, rubber tracks and standard blade, up to 10,417 lb with a cab, steel tracks and the 6-in-1 blade. That is about 4.6 to 5.2 US tons.
- KX040-4: 9,195 lb to 10,360 lb across the same range of builds.
- Transport size: 16 ft 8.2 in long and 8 ft 2 in high with the cab. Width is 5 ft 6.9 in with the standard blade, or 5 ft 10.9 in with an angle or 6-in-1 blade.
- Tie-downs: Kubota’s KX040-4 brochure points to the blade’s side plates as tie-down points. Follow the operator’s manual for your machine.
Kubota’s weights include the operator (165 lb on the KX040-5, 175 lb on the KX040-4). Add any attachments you carry, such as a thumb, spare buckets or a breaker, then check the total against your trailer and truck. The trailer, tow rating and CDL math in our skid steer weight guide works the same way for an excavator.
Kubota KX040 price
Kubota’s US website lists the KX040-5 at an MSRP “as low as” $68,768 and the KX040-4 at $64,946 (kubotausa.com, checked October 6, 2026). Those are the lowest list prices. A cab, an angle or 6-in-1 blade, steel tracks, the second auxiliary circuit and other options add to them, and dealers set their own selling prices.
We do not publish an average used price, because asking prices swing with hours, year, cab and blade. To judge a used machine, compare several current listings for the same configuration.
KX040-5 features and options
- Standard: ROPS/OPG (Top Guard, Level I) canopy, weight-adjustable suspension seat, 7 in color LCD with jog dial, keyless start with up to 10 user passcodes, KubotaNOW telematics, auto idle and engine auto stop, two-speed travel with auto-shift, blade float, AUX1 with adjustable maximum flow, thumb bracket and relief valve, automatic third-line hydraulic return, two-pattern (ISO/SAE) control selection, and LED work lights with a turn-off delay.

- Cab: Kubota quotes 72 dB inside the cab from its own in-house test, with the door closed. Cab machines include a Bluetooth radio.
- Attachment flow memory: up to five auxiliary flow rates can be saved on the display and recalled for different attachments.
KX040-4 problems: what to check
Kubota does not publish a list of common problems, and we do not repeat forum claims we cannot verify. What Kubota’s own KX040-4 brochure does tell an owner or a used buyer to watch is this:
- DPF regeneration: the machine burns soot out of its diesel particulate filter automatically, but only at sufficient engine speed. If the speed is too low, the display asks for more. Kubota says a service call or DPF replacement is needed once soot builds to the point that it reduces engine speed, so ask how the machine was run and whether regeneration was often inhibited.
- Fuel and water: Kubota calls clean fuel “of paramount importance” for these Tier 4 engines. Check the clear bowl on the fuel/water separator and drain it.
- Usage history: the KX040-4 records up to 90 days of operation dates on its display. Look at it before you buy.
- Pins and hoses: the front attachment and swing bracket pivot on bushings, and the grease points for the swivel bearing are grouped at the front of the house. Check for play and for signs it was greased.
Kubota KX040-5 vs. Bobcat E35
The Bobcat E35 is a smaller machine we also cover. It is lighter and has zero tail swing in its standard build; the KX040-5 has more power, digs about 13 in deeper and has more bucket force.
